Yesterday morning on the footpaths of South Friedrichstraße an amazing discovery was made. An extinct species from the subway have taken root in our city again. These plants, which belong to the family of short-lived Rhytmopoden, occur only as an urban phenomenon on subway ventilation grills, which are also found on Friedrichstrasse.

So far three species have been identified (see photos): The Black Ribbon Grass, the Tubular Tonnenhalm, and the Baggy Giant Puffball.

All three types are characterised by rhythmic expansion and contraction, which takes place throughout the day every 4 minutes, and every 10 minutes during the evening. The change in this cycle is attributed to the decrease in light intensity towards the evening.
